Elizabeth Levin Indianapolis IN Death and Obituary – It is with profound sadness and admiration that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Ann Levin (Betsy), a beloved music educator and performer, on Monday, March 10, 2025, at the age of 71. Betsy’s courageous six-year battle with head and neck cancer came to a peaceful conclusion, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family. Her death marks the end of an era in the world of music education, but her legacy will endure through the countless students and musicians she mentored over her distinguished career.
A Life Rooted in Music and Passion
Betsy was born on July 28, 1953, in Jamaica, New York, to the late Dr. Charles M. Levin and Catherine Elizabeth (Zimmer) Levin. Music was always a central part of her life, with her father being an accomplished musician in addition to his medical career. Betsy began piano lessons at the age of seven, and by fourth grade, she added the violin to her repertoire. Her childhood experiences, which included playing in a family band during holidays, instilled in her a lifelong passion for music, setting the stage for her remarkable career.
Academic and Professional Achievements
Betsy’s love for music led her to pursue formal education in music, attending the Hartt College of Music at the University of Hartford, where she obtained a degree in Music Education. She later continued her studies at Butler University in Indianapolis, earning a Master’s Degree in Violin Performance. This academic foundation paved the way for a thriving career that included teaching and performing, most notably in Las Vegas, where she worked as both a teacher and a performer with major hotel orchestras. During this time, she played for legends such as Liberace, Cher, and Dolly Parton.
Betsy’s affiliation with the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) was a pivotal part of her career, shaping her work as an educator and performer.
A Dedicated Educator and Leader
After her years in Las Vegas, Betsy returned to Indiana, where she spent 31 years teaching at Southport Middle School and Southport High School. Her passion for music education was evident in the way she nurtured young talent, touching the lives of thousands of students over her career. Betsy served as the Music Department Chair at Southport High School for 22 years, earning recognition and numerous awards, including SHS and Perry Township Teacher of the Year and IMEA Outstanding High School Music Educator.
Betsy’s influence extended beyond the classroom, as she contributed to the field of music education nationally. She served as the Chairman of the All-State Orchestra for 15 years and played an active role in developing the MENC Orchestra Course of Study Task Force. Her commitment to the advancement of music education was truly remarkable.
A Legacy of Performance
While teaching was her primary focus, Betsy was also a gifted performer. She was the Concertmaster of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis for 21 years, and her performances were a staple in the city’s music scene. One of her most memorable moments was playing with Led Zeppelin at Market Square Arena, a testament to her versatility as a musician.
Betsy’s commitment to music extended beyond the stage and classroom. She was a dedicated member of Mu Phi Epsilon, serving as the President of the Indianapolis Alumni Chapter for 13 years. Even after retirement, Betsy continued to teach privately and was involved with Paige’s Music and Butler University.
Cherished Family and Friends
Betsy is survived by her sister, Catherine Radomski (John), her nephew and niece, John Radomski (Haley) and Jane Betsy Radomski (Isaac Pulford), as well as other extended family members. While she never had children of her own, Betsy considered her students her “children,” forming deep, lasting bonds with many of them.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 14, at St. Mark Catholic Church in Indianapolis. Friends and family can gather for visitation on Thursday, March 13, at Singleton & St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory.
