Papa Francesco Death and Obituary – With a heavy heart, the Catholic Church and the faithful across the globe mourn the passing of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis. On April 21st, 2025, the Vatican’s official media arm solemnly announced the death of Pope Francis at his residence in the Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City. The Church loses not just its Supreme Pontiff, but a deeply compassionate shepherd who championed the cause of the poor, the marginalized, and the forgotten.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history in more ways than one. He was the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years. His election to the papacy on April 13, 2013, marked a new chapter in the Church—one grounded in humility, simplicity, and unwavering service.
Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis captured the hearts of millions by leading with compassion and an open heart. One of the most memorable events in his pontificate was his visit to the Philippines from January 15 to 19, 2016. Amidst typhoons and national grief, his presence brought immense comfort to the Filipino people. His final Papal Mass at Luneta drew a crowd of over six million—making it the largest Papal gathering in recorded history. That moment underscored how deeply he was loved by the people, not just as a religious leader, but as a father and friend.
Under his guidance, many milestones were achieved for the global Church and its local communities. It was during his papacy that we, in the Philippines, were blessed with the honor of being conferred the title of International Shrine and received the Rosa Aurea (Golden Rose) — a rare and sacred token bestowed upon the image of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage. This act reflected Pope Francis’ enduring devotion to Mary and his appreciation for the vibrant faith of the Filipino people.
Pope Francis tirelessly preached the Gospel not just in word, but through actions rooted in mercy, justice, and service. He taught us to see Christ in the eyes of the poor, to care for the environment, and to build a Church that listens, welcomes, and walks with all. His legacy is one that calls us to live our faith authentically—through compassion, humility, and unwavering hope.
