Maya Adetula Houston, Texas Death and Obituary – It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Folasade “Maya” Adetula of Houston, Texas, on May 7, 2025. A former standout player for the Rice Owls Women’s Basketball team, Maya leaves behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and unwavering positivity. Her sudden departure has left an immense void in the lives of her family, friends, former teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Maya Adetula was more than just an athlete—she was a beacon of light. Known for her vibrant energy, radiant smile, and kind-hearted nature, Maya had a unique ability to bring people together and make them feel valued. Whether on the basketball court or in everyday life, her presence was magnetic. She possessed the rare gift of making everyone feel heard, seen, and loved.
As a former collegiate athlete, Maya demonstrated resilience, determination, and a team-first attitude that earned her admiration from coaches and peers alike. Her contribution to the Rice Owls went beyond points and rebounds; she was a leader, a motivator, and a friend. Even after her playing days, Maya remained involved in her community, always finding ways to uplift others through her words and actions.
Those closest to Maya describe her as a woman of deep empathy and grace. She extended love without conditions and gave support without hesitation. Whether she was comforting a friend, encouraging a teammate, or simply sharing a laugh, Maya’s heart was open to all. Her relationships were rooted in sincerity and mutual respect, and her compassion left a lasting mark on everyone she met.
In her personal life, Maya was a beloved daughter, sister, and confidante. Her deep love for her family was evident in everything she did. She lived a life of intention—always prioritizing connection, community, and kindness. Her legacy is not only in her achievements, but in the way she made people feel: important, accepted, and loved.
To honor Maya’s life and the profound impact she had on others, a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. John Church Unleashed, located at 1701 W. Jefferson Street, Grand Prairie, TX 75051. Friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by Maya are encouraged to attend and share their memories.
Attendees are also invited to contribute to a video tribute by sending photos or cherished memories to 972-339-8409. These shared moments will help illustrate the rich, love-filled life Maya lived.
Though her time with us was far too short, the love and joy Maya spread will continue to inspire. Her memory will remain alive in the hearts of all who knew her.
