Chloe Childress Obituary and Death – Chloe Madeline Childress, 18, of Houston, Texas, passed away on July 4, 2025, while serving as a counselor at Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas—a place she loved dearly and where she had spent nearly a decade of her young life. Chloe died doing what she loved most: mentoring, guiding, and inspiring young girls in a setting that helped shape her generous spirit and deep commitment to service.
Born to Wendie Seale Childress and Matthew Benton Childress, Chloe was a beacon of love and joy to her family, including her beloved brother, John “Jack” Oxford Childress. Her kindness, boundless energy, and faith-filled heart made her a friend to all, a mentor to many, and a light to everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Chloe recently graduated from The Kinkaid School, where she exemplified excellence and compassion in all areas. She was Co-President of the Honor Council, a role that reflected her unwavering integrity. An accomplished student, Chloe participated in the Leadership Honors Program, was recognized in the Visual and Performing Arts Honors Program for Photography, and was a member of the National Chinese Honor Society.
Her leadership extended far beyond academics. Chloe was a varsity athlete in cross country, tennis, cheerleading, and lacrosse, while also mentoring younger students as a senior guide. She founded the Love Our Senior Citizens Club, aiming to bridge generations through kindness and connection. Her involvement in Model United Nations, Student Wellbeing Advisory Board, One Love Club, Psychology Club, and Kinkaid Young Life further highlighted her drive to make a positive impact.
Creatively gifted, Chloe was a musician and artist whose talents earned her multiple Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards. She found joy in writing original songs, playing self-taught guitar, and dancing at concerts. Music was her language of love, shared freely with those around her. Chloe cherished quiet evenings with her father and friends, deep in thoughtful conversations or enjoying her favorite shows.
Passionate about serving others, Chloe volunteered with The Brookwood Community, Houston Food Bank, Memorial Park Conservancy, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Her dream of becoming a doctor led her to attend the Vanderbilt Summer Academy and shadow neurosurgeons. She was set to begin her studies in pre-med at the University of Texas at Austin this fall, proudly continuing a family tradition as a fourth-generation Longhorn.
But it was at Camp Mystic where Chloe’s soul seemed most at home. A fourth-generation camper, M Girl, and war canoe leader, she returned this summer as a counselor, pouring love, strength, and joy into every day. She was a role model and a steady presence for her campers, embodying the camp’s deepest values.
Chloe is survived by her loving family and her cherished dog, Rowan. A Celebration of Life will be held on July 12 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Houston. Though her life was brief, the depth of Chloe’s impact is immeasurable. Her light will continue to guide and inspire all who were blessed to know her.
