Smith Bachtold Fairbury IL Obituary and Death – Smith Joseph Bachtold, a beloved member of the Fairbury, Illinois community, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the age of 28. His passing has left a profound sense of loss among his family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors, but his life continues to inspire through the legacy of love, service, and faith he leaves behind.

Born on June 27, 1997, in Santa Ana, California, Smith was the cherished son of Joe and Cathy (Uphoff) Bachtold. Raised in a close-knit family, he was a devoted brother to Joelle, Miah, Emma, and Abbey, and a treasured grandson to John Uphoff of Gridley. His maternal grandmother, Liz Uphoff, and paternal grandparents, Roger and Shirlene Bachtold, preceded him in death.

Smith’s life reflected a spirit of resilience and transformation. Though he faced personal challenges, he emerged stronger, more compassionate, and deeply committed to his values. His employment at Fairbury Fastener, where he worked alongside his close friend Tanner Ifft, was not only a source of income but a foundation for personal growth and meaningful relationships.

A passionate and active member of his community, Smith was known for his selflessness and willingness to serve. He volunteered with the Fairbury Chamber of Commerce and proudly served as a volunteer firefighter, a role that showcased his bravery and community spirit. He was also known for supporting close friends like Kolby and Gabby Kafer and was always quick to lend a hand when needed.

Smith held strong convictions and wasn’t shy about discussing them. He was deeply patriotic, proudly pro-life, and enjoyed engaging in political discussions. His interests also included playing golf and working on his Jeep—hobbies that brought him moments of joy and peace.

Family was central to Smith’s life. He shared a close and affectionate bond with his nieces, nephews, and siblings. Known for his ability to connect with anyone, Smith had a warm, approachable nature that made him a friend to many and a stranger to none.

One of the most meaningful milestones in Smith’s life occurred last year when he committed his life to Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. His faith brought him peace, purpose, and hope. His family takes comfort in the belief that they will one day be reunited with him in Heaven and welcomes others to explore the faith that transformed his life.

A service to celebrate Smith’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025, at the First Baptist Church of Fairbury, officiated by Pastor Daryl Evans. Burial will follow at Pike Township Cemetery in rural Chenoa. Visitation will take place at the church from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., prior to the service.
